County sending letter to W.Va. DOH regarding condition of Brushy Fork, Stony Run roads

BUCKHANNON – The Upshur County Commission on Thursday approved a motion to send a letter to the West Virginia Department of Highways regarding residents’ complaints about the state of Brushy Fork and Stony Run roads.

Commission president Sam Nolte said about six or seven people had approached him and asked about the condition of Stony Run and Brushy Fork.

“A couple of people have approached me and said they have almost gone off the road because of spots
where the road dips off and there are broken-off sections.”

Nolte said the county does not control the roads, but he does believe it is becoming a safety concern.

“I do feel like it is at a point where it can be considered a safety issue,” Nolte said. “I’m sure there is an explanation, and I’m sure it’s on the list to be patched.”

Nolte said one of the worst areas is past the Brushy Fork Mart, towards Stony Run.

“I’ve been down there and if you haven’t been down there recently you might not have seen how bad it is,” Nolte said. “It’s really been within the last 30 days that it’s gotten really bad.”

Nolte made a motion to send a letter to the DOH, which was seconded by commissioner Kristie Tenney prior to passing.

Commissioner Terry Cutright was absent from Thursday’s meeting.

In other commission news:

• The bid for the COPS Camera Surveillance Project was awarded to Micrologic from Buckhannon. The bid was for $340,891.00. The project, which includes the installation of security cameras in Upshur County Schools to enhance student safety on school grounds, is grant-funded.

• The commission approved a request from Jack L. Reger on behalf of the Buckhannon-Upshur High School Class of 1976, requesting permission to place a bench at the Upshur County Pool memorializing Tappan Williams Squires.

• The Commission approved a request from Jack L. Reger on behalf of the B-UHS Class of 1976, seeking permission to utilize the Upshur County Pool June 1, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. A fundraiser will be held on behalf of the Splash Williams Scholarship Fund in memory and honor of Tappan Williams Squires.

A Salem woman was trapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated after a two-vehicle crash on Route 33 north of the Huddle House. Police say a truck driver attempting to cross lanes to turn left was cited for failing to yield.
