Self-inflicted wounds hurt Bucs against No. 2 Morgantown in 63-42 loss

TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur at times were their own worst enemy against the No. 2 Class AAAA Morgantown Mohigans in their non-conference contest Wednesday night.

The Bucs committed 19 first-half turnovers and found themselves down by a 35-18 score at the break en route to a 63-42 setback.

The Bucs had 31 turnovers in the game which allowed Morgantown to get off 36 more field goals. The Bucs shot 52 percent for the game (17-for-33) while Morgantown was at 32 percent (22-for-69) but with the 36 more attempts.

Malaki Williams gave the Bucs a 2-0 lead with a lay-up, but Morgantown scored seven unanswered for a 7-2 lead.

Carter Zuliani and Ian Strader put in consecutive baskets for the Bucs making it a 7-6 contest and they went into the second quarter down by a 14-9 count.

Morgantown started the second quarter on an 8-2 run putting the Bucs down 22-11 before Bryson Johnston scored on a jumper making it a 23-11 contest with three minutes gone.

Morgantown went on an 8-0 run before Zuliani put in a free throw making it a 31-14 game with 2:46 left in the half.

B-U went into the half down by a 35-18 score.

Zuliani scored on a short jumper to make it a 39-22 contest three minutes into the third, but a 9-0 run by Morgantown put the game out of reach for the Bucs, at 48-22, with 90 seconds remaining In the third.

Buckhannon-Upshur started the fourth quarter down by a 52-25 score.

Down 56-28, the Bucs went on a 7-0 run after a lay-up by Williams, a trey from Jerin Westfall and a lay-up by Strader making it a 56-35 game with 5:17 remaining.

The Bucs closed it to 18, at 57-39, after a Jerin Westfall lay-up with four minutes remaining, but couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

Sharron Young led the Mohigans with 23 points while Marty Johnson added 13.

Morgantown improved to 20-1 on the season.

Zuliani had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Bucs, who dropped to 14-6.

They were slated to wrap up their regular season hosting Class AAA No. 2 East Fairmont Thursday night.
