Lady Buc lacrosse team evens record at 2-2 after getting road wins at Morgantown and St. Albans

MORGANTOWN – Following a 0-2 start to the season, the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc lacrosse team has righted the ship after picking up a pair of consecutive road wins last week against Morgantown and St. Albans.

Last Wednesday, the Lady Bucs went to Morgantown and came back with a 9-4 victory then made the trip to the Kanawha Valley on Friday and defeated St. Albans by a 15-2 score.

The action left Jamie Greene’s team with a 2-2 record.

Against Morgantown, the Lady Bucs owned a 3-2 lead at the half and pulled away in the second half for the 9-4 win.

Mallory Moss and Kendall Defibaugh led the B-U attack with three goals while Heather Hayes scored twice and Ryle Carr once.

Carr and Kendall Hefner each had an assist in the game.

Genevieve Gregory led the team with 10 ground balls while Defibaugh won seven draw controls.

B-U keeper Haylea Crihfield made eight saves in the win.

“I thought we started out slow and kind of played down to their level,” stated Greene. “Once we got our feet under us, we played better.”

Greene said he happy to see his young team get their first win.

“We lost nine seniors from last year, we have two returners starting and we are playing two freshmen,” noted Greene. “Our younger players are adjusting well. For such a young team, I think we are on the verge of being able to play with anyone, if we can eliminate some of our simple mistakes. Our biggest thing is we need to eliminate our turnovers. We would get it and then turn it right back over to them.”

Friday’s game with St. Albans was never in doubt as the Lady Bucs controlled play from start to finish in their 15-2 win.

Moss paced the Buckhannon-Upshur offense with six goals while Defibaugh and Hayes each had three and Carr, Maya Garcia and Jacklyn Leichliter each had one.

Hayes and Jessica Sandberg each had an assist for the Lady Bucs.

Kaylee Black collected a team-high 10 ground balls in the win.

Defibaugh won seven draws.

Crichfield and Josie Rosencrance split time in net for the Lady Bucs with Crihfield making one save and Rosencrance two.

“I thought the girls came out and played as a team and played together the entire game,” stated Greene. “We had several girls scoring which is a good sign and we had great pressure defense. I like  the teamwork and the aggressive nature in which we played. If we can keep that up and keep getting better, we can match up with any team.”

The Lady Bucs were slated to visit George Washington Tuesday evening.

They will return to action with a rematch against Morgantown at home on Thursday starting at 7:30 p.m.
