Basketball ‘Cats drop one-point decision to Frostburg State, 60-59

FROSTBURG, Md. – The West Virginia Wesleyan (0-3, 0-1) men’s basketball team fell on the in a conference game at Frostburg State (2-2, 1-0) on Saturday (Nov. 19) afternoon at Bobcat Arena in Frostburg, Md.

WVWC Leaders
Darius Green led the Bobcats with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six steals. Anthony Craven Jr. added 15 points and came up with three rebounds and two steals. Tyler Slone added 13 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

Inside the First Half
Frostburg State opened the game by outscoring WVWC 8-2 to gain an early lead. Back-to-back layups from Green and Alec Hillard cut the WVWC deficit to two and FSU led 8-6. Slone banged home a shot from beyond the arc with 8:06 left in the first half and Wesleyan trailed 12-9.

FSU outscored WVWC 10-3 over the next four minutes and led 22-13 with 5:10 left in the first half. Slone drilled a three-pointer and a layup from Green cut the deficit to four and Wesleyan trailed 22-18. Following a Frostburg State three-pointer, Green nailed a step-back jumper from beyond the arc and WVWC trailed 25-21. Anthony Cravens Jr. scored the final points of the half and Wesleyan trailed 30-23 going into the locker room.

Inside the Second Half
FSU came out of the locker room on fire to begin the second half outscoring WVWC 14-7 and led 44-30. Slone drained a three-pointer, Green scored the next six Wesleyan points and WVWC trailed 48-40. Bo Schene got three points the old-fashioned way and FSU led 51-40 with 7:13 left to play in the second half.

Wesleyan went on a scoring run of eight points and trailed 51-48. After an FSU layup, Craven Jr. and Green had back-to-back layups and WVWC trailed by one 53-52. Frostburg State extended their lead to six on a lay from Sean Brown Jr. 59-53 with 2:56 left in the game. Back-to-back field goals from Green and Craven Jr. WVWC trailed 59-57. Schene gave FSU a three-point lead after sinking a free throw 60-57. Craven Jr. nailed a jumper with a hand in his face and WVWC trailed 60-59. Despite the best efforts from WVWC, FSU held on to grab the 60-59 win.
