WVU Hospitals now accepting applications for summer nurse extern program

WVU Hospitals (WVUH), which includes WVU Medicine’s J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and WVU Medicine Children’s in Morgantown as well as Fairmont Medical Center – is now accepting applications for its 2026 Summer Nurse Externship Program, a nine-week paid opportunity to prepare nursing students for the transition from classroom to clinical practice.

The program, scheduled for June 1 through Aug. 1, 2026, provides nursing students entering their senior year with meaningful, hands-on experiences that strengthen clinical skills and build confidence at the bedside.

Throughout the externship, participants will rotate through a variety of specialties, including surgery, critical care, pediatrics, and emergency medicine. By working alongside experienced WVUH nurses, externs gain valuable insight into patient care while developing the skills needed to thrive in their future roles.

“Our externship is more than a summer job – it’s an opportunity to learn, grow, and discover where your passion in nursing lies,” Ashley Biafore, nurse extern and Aspiring Nurse coordinator at WVUH, said. “By the end of the program, students not only refine their clinical skills but also gain a clearer picture of their future in the profession.”

Many externs choose to continue their journey at WVUH with the opportunity to extend their role on selected units after the summer program concludes. This experience often serves as a pathway to future employment and long-term career growth within WVU Medicine.

Applications are now being accepted online at WVUMedicine.org/Careers or directly through the job posting link.
