West Virginia reports 719 active COVID cases, six new deaths on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 719 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 57 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (13), Barbour (7), Lewis (0), Randolph (6) and Webster (0) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of three active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Six additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 80-year old male from Wyoming County, a 75-year old female from Ohio County, a 90-year old male from Preston County, an 81-year old male from Jackson County, an 80-year old female from Berkeley County, and a 70-year old female from Fayette County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of April 27, 2022, there are currently 719 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been six deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,851 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 91 residents are hospitalized with the virus (58% unvaccinated, 42% vaccinated), with 23 currently in intensive care (52% unvaccinated, 48% vaccinated) and 12 on a ventilator (42% unvaccinated, 58% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 4.14%. 

A total of 973,641 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 464,145 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
