West Virginia reports 57 COVID-19 deaths Friday as active cases hit an all-time high

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 29,744 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 971 since the last report. Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (616), Barbour (263), Lewis (292), Randolph (310) and Webster (59) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 14 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Fifty-seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR. New deaths include:

  • a 70-year old female from Barbour County
  • a 59-year old female from Barbour County
  • a 50-year old female from Randolph County
  • a 75-year old male from Clay County
  • a 95-year old male from Monongalia County
  • an 84-year old male from Raleigh County
  • a 61-year old male from Mercer County
  • an 85-year old female from Tucker County
  • a 67-year old male from Wood County
  • a 45-year old male from Wood County
  • a 76-year old male from Morgan County
  • a 63-year old male from Harrison County
  • a 70-year old male from Mercer County
  • a 50-year old female from Greenbrier County
  • a 47-year old male from Mercer County
  • a 56-year old male from Monongalia County
  • a 54-year old male from Wayne County
  • an 84-year old female from Mingo County
  • an 80-year old male from Lincoln County
  • an 89-year old female from Monongalia County
  • a 67-year old male from Mingo County
  • a 73-year old female from Mason County
  • a 91-year old male from Kanawha County
  • an 87-year old female from Wirt County
  • an 83-year old male from Brooke County
  • a 77-year old male from Monongalia County
  • a 63-year old female from Mason County

  • a 62-year old male from Kanawha County
  • an 85-year old male from Mineral County
  • a 63-year old male from Kanawha County
  • an 80-year old female from Wayne County
  • a 97-year old female from Greenbrier County
  • an 84-year old female from Preston County
  • a 58-year old male from Raleigh County
  • an 88-year old female from Mineral County

“We mourn with all families suffering the loss of loved ones due to COVID-19,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary. “If you are eligible, I urge you to schedule your COVID vaccine today.”

More than 905 residents are hospitalized with the virus (82% unvaccinated, 18% vaccinated), with 278 currently in intensive care (90% unvaccinated, 10% vaccinated) and 160 on a ventilator (91% unvaccinated, 9% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 11.43%.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of September 17, 2021, there have been 3,664,554 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 219,439 total cases and 3,370 deaths,” according to a press release.

A total of 935,803 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 52% of the state.
