West Virginia records 46 deaths from COVID-19 Tuesday as cases continue to surge locally

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 46 more West Virginians have died from COVID-19, pushing the state’s death toll to 1,442.

More than 150 residents have died from COVID-19 in the last week.

“As the COVID-19 fatality count continues to rise, we must remember that these individuals are daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, neighbors and friends,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary, said in a press release.

A total of 1,276 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State, the DHHR added. The daily percent positive was 12% Tuesday.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (31), Barbour (12), Lewis (9), Randolph (30) and Webster (2) counties.

A total of 254 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

Tuesday’s Upshur update:

  • Added 15 probable and 17 confirmed cases to Jan. 4
  • Removed one probable case and added two confirmed cases to Jan. 3
  • Removed two probable cases and added one confirmed case to Jan. 2
  • Removed one confirmed case from Jan. 1
  • Removed one probable case and added one confirmed case to Dec. 31

Upshur County’s infection rate is now four times the amount required to be classified at the red alert level on the daily color-coded map. For the first time, every single county statewide was either orange or red, the levels previously deemed unsafe for school. Gov. Jim Justice, however, has said he will reopen schools statewide this month regardless of infection rates.
