Vandalia Health surgeon performs state’s first outpatient robotic surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome

Ghulam Abbas, MD

Vandalia Health’s internationally recognized robotic thoracic surgeon, Ghulam Abbas, MD, has introduced a groundbreaking surgical technique for treating thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) — the robotic first rib resection (R-FRR) — now available in an outpatient setting. This innovative approach is revolutionizing treatment for TOS, offering patients in West Virginia a faster, more convenient recovery with the added benefits of minimally invasive surgery.

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a group of disorders caused by the compression of nerves, veins or arteries serving the upper extremities. These conditions lead to severe pain, tingling, swelling, and, in rare cases, reduced blood flow. For many patients, surgery to decompress the thoracic outlet by removing the first rib is the best course of treatment. However, traditional surgical techniques with this procedure are often associated with risks such as nerve injury and incomplete rib resection.

Offered for the first time in an outpatient setting at Vandalia Health’s Mon Health Medical Center and CAMC, R-FRR uses advanced robotic technology to address the challenges of traditional surgery. By providing high-definition, 3D visualization and unparalleled precision, robotic systems allow surgeons to completely resect the problematic rib segment with minimal risk, eliminating the need for retracting delicate neurovascular structures. This approach not only enhances safety but also ensures more effective decompression for patients.

“Robotic first rib resection is a major leap forward in the treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome,” Dr. Abbas said. “With superior visualization and instrument control, we can safely and completely address the underlying causes of TOS while minimizing complications associated with traditional methods. Offering this procedure in an outpatient setting not only allows for a faster recovery and reduced risk of infection but also provides patients with the convenience of going home the same day, making the experience more comfortable and cost-effective.”

“Dr. Abbas’ robotic first rib resection procedure in an outpatient setting has elevated our standard of care for patients suffering from thoracic outlet syndrome. His pioneering approach not only enhances precision and reduces recovery time but also improves patient outcomes, allowing individuals to regain mobility and quality of life more quickly,” said David Goldberg, President and CEO of Mon Health System and Davis Health System-Vandalia Health Northern Region, and Executive Vice President of Vandalia Health. “By introducing advanced robotic technology for thoracic outlet syndrome in an outpatient setting, Dr. Abbas has set a new benchmark in minimally invasive surgery and affirms our ongoing commitment to delivering the highest level of care and innovation in the treatment of these complex conditions.”
