Tennis Lady Bucs drop outings to University and Philip Barbour

BUCKHANNON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc tennis team suffered a pair of setbacks on Monday and Tuesday to the University Hawks and the Philip Barbour Colts.

The Lady Bucs dropped both outings by identical 7-0 scores.

“I am proud of Cate O’Neill for stepping up at No. 4 singles and filling in at No. 2 doubles for Mya Critchfield,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “I thought Cate held her own and her shots have improved so much since she started playing at the beginning of last season. Patience Cook also stepped up to varsity and she and Alexis Wuchner got a game on probably the strongest No. 3 doubles girls’ team we will see all season.”

Against Philip Barbour, the closest singles match belonged to Critchfield at No. 4 singles dropping an 8-5 verdict to Olivia Baker and O’Neill and Wuchner lost a competitive 9-7 contest to Cheyenne Kittle and Lindsey Weese at No. 3 doubles.

“Our girls played Philip Barbour competitive and we at least won a game in every match,” noted Rock. “Unfortunately we didn’t get any wins in the match but a lot of matches were competitive. Mya played a great singles match and really fought the entire match. I also thought Lainey Rowan played a strong match at No. 2 singles and is working on getting better at eliminating unforced errors. Cate and Alexis were up two or three games in their doubles match and couldn’t fend off their opponents in the end. Their opponents had a unique positioning strategy that Cate and Alexis had never played against so it was good experience for them.”

The action dropped the Lady Bucs to 1-6 on the season.

They will return to the courts Thursday at Bridgeport for a 4 p.m. battle.
