Name of man who died in fatal motorcycle wreck Sunday released

TENNERTON – The name of the man who died from injuries suffered in a one-vehicle motorcycle wreck Sunday, July 26 has been released.

Philip D. Mercer, 61, of Philippi, passed away after being ejected from his motorcycle while traveling south along U.S. Route 20 South Road near the state police barracks, investigating officer Cpl. V.J. Pyles with the Buckhannon detachment of the West Virginia State Police said Wednesday.

According a previous article, the fatal wreck occurred at about 12:30 p.m. July 26 approximately .3 miles south of B-U Drive on Route 20 South when Mercer, the driver of the motorcycle, entered a sharp righthand turn and lost control.

“The best I can determine is he tried to correct it and wasn’t able to and struck an embankment near a ditch and a sign and was then ejected,” Pyles said.

Mercer was transported by Upshur EMS to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he passed away from injuries just before 2:30 p.m.
