More than 6,000 West Virginians have now died from COVID-19

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 7,262 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 814 since the last report. 

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (176), Barbour (87), Lewis (63), Randolph (56) and Webster (39) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of three active cases since Friday.

Thirty-one additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 59-year old male from Harrison County, a 64-year old female from Wood County, a 78-year old female from Braxton County, an 80-year old female from Marion County, a 69-year old male from Wood County, a 90-year old female from Putnam County, a 79-year old male from Cabell County, a 90-year old female from Cabell County, a 79-year old female from Hancock County, a 72-year old female from Taylor County, a 68-year old male from Cabell County, a 64-year old male from Jackson County, a 54-year old male from Greenbrier County, an 89-year old female from Cabell County, an 87-year old male from Jackson County, a 96-year old female from Fayette County, an 85-year old female from Doddridge County, a 91-year old male from Wood County, an 84-year old female from Kanawha County, a 75-year old female from Harrison County, a 56-year old male from Harrison County, a 96-year old male from Mingo County, a 68-year old male from Harrison County, a 72-year old female from Fayette County, a 71-year old female from Cabell County, an 82-year old female from Kanawha County, an 86-year old male from Wood County, a 78-year old male from Kanawha County, a 57-year old male from Greenbrier County, a 64-year old male from Fayette County, and an 85-year old male from Lincoln County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of February 14, 2022, there are currently 7,262 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 31 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,023 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 779 residents are hospitalized with the virus (67% unvaccinated, 33% vaccinated), with 180 currently in intensive care (74% unvaccinated, 26% vaccinated) and 113 on a ventilator (81% unvaccinated, 19% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 15.25%. 

A total of 957,366 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 402,952 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
