Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Appropriations Committee, today announced $750,000 through the Drug-Free Communities Support Program (DFC) grant from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). This funding will support efforts across West Virginia to prevent youth substance use disorder.
“West Virginia has the highest overdose death rate per capita of any state in the nation, and the impacts of this epidemic can be felt by every family, community and person in our state. Our future generations are also affected by the opioid crisis, from the 10,500 homeless youth and children in West Virginia to our youth being at a much higher risk for substance use disorder.
The effect on our children and youth is horrific and we must address the consequences of the opioid epidemic on the generations to come. We need all the help we can get for those dealing with substance use disorder so they can receive treatment and we can begin to heal as a state and a nation.
As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight to ensure West Virginia receives the necessary funding to fight the opioid epidemic in every way possible,” said Senator Manchin.
“The White House Office of National Drug Policy has been a great partner in focusing on community-based support. When I was chairman of the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee, I set the funding level for the Drug Free Communities Program.
I’ve met with Director Jim Carroll several times about the needs of West Virginia and how the federal government can best respond to the opioid epidemic. I’m pleased to see this funding go to our state to help those suffering from addiction and to prevent future cases,” said Senator Capito.
