The West Virginia Wesleyan College women’s soccer team edged Concord 2-1 in a back-and-forth match at Wood Street Field Wednesday night.
The Lady ‘Cats struck early, with a Haelly Ramirez strike just a minute into the game giving Wesleyan a 1-0 lead. But Concord heavily out-shot Wesleyan and eventually evened things up in the 68th minute.
Kayla Fay tallied the game winner about five minutes later. She took a corner kick, which was partially cleared but then controlled by Wesleyan and returned to Fay, who struck an arching, angling shot that sailed into the back of the net.
Senior keeper Chelsea Hubner was spectacular in goal for Wesleyan, turning away 10 shots as the home squad held on for the victory.
The win against one of the MEC’s top teams was crucial for the Lady ‘Cats, who have stumbled early and are hampered by injuries to several key players. They’re now 2-3 heading into a match against Salem on Saturday. Kick-off for that game is set for 7 p.m. in Buckhannon.
