Lady Buc netters win two matches at regionals

MORGANTOWN – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc tennis team was able to send competitors into round two in both singles and doubles action at the recent Region I Tournament last week in Morgantown.

In singles competition, Madelyn Frye had the lone singles win for B-U when she knocked off Faith Wachter of John Marshall by an 8-6 score.

Frye was then defeated in round two by Lyla Byers of University by an 8-0 score.

In doubles action, Frye teamed with Mya Critchfield to defeat another B-U team in the first round as they downed Alexis Wuchner and Cate O’Neill by an 8-1 score.

The duo fell in the second round to Taylor Broadwater and Madeline Bradshaw of Wheeling Park by an 8-1 score.

The pairing of Tori Adams and Lainey Rowan had a hard-fought match but came up just short against Brooke’s Melesse Wiersbicki and Ava Bolen by an 8-6 score.

“Madelyn played a tough match against John Marshall’s number two player in Wacther and got the win,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “Unfortunately for her, she got the best player in the region (boy or girl) in Byers from University. I was proud of her for winning her first round and even for her attitude against Byers in the second round. She just played hard and fought for every ball like she has her whole career the last three seasons and just had fun with it. In doubles, Tori and Lainey were really close to pulling out the win and I think the inner squad matchup between Mya/Madelyn and Alexis/Cate was closer than the score showed. Mya and Madelyn met a very strong Wheeling Park No. 1 team in the second round but still managed to play hard and get a game on them.”

The regional tournament closed out the year for the Lady Bucs.

“Overall, I was pleased that we won a few matches and finished the season well,” concluded Rock. “I think the kids all had fun in their matches, despite the tough regional competition, and they already can’t wait for next year. We will really miss Madelyn, our lone senior, but everyone else is coming back! There is already talk amongst the underclassmen of playing tennis in the offseason, taking lessons, hitting the gym and working out, etc. which is great to hear!”
