Freshman Bucs tumble to North Marion, 48-34

RACHEL – A rough third quarter erased any chance for the Buckhannon-Upshur freshmen Buccaneers to secure a win on the road against North Marion Huskies Tuesday evening.

The Bucs trailed by just seven at the break, by a 23-16 score, but they were outscored by a 15-6 margin in the third quarter and trailed heading into the final eight minutes by a 38-22 score.

The Bucs won the final frame by a 12-10 count but it wasn’t enough to overcome their deficit.

Jonas Barton led the Bucs with 14 points while Jevon Westfall had 11.

It was the first game for the Bucs in almost three weeks as the team as fought through COVID-19 protocols. The Bucs have missed out of six games this season.

“I was pleased with their performance against North Marion even though we lost,” stated head coach Robert Hatcher. “They are growing as a team and making better decisions with the ball. The majority of the team has not played any basketball in almost three years due to COVID and never having played organized ball. I look for big thing from them as we get more actual game experience under their belts.”

The Bucs are now 0-2 on the season.

Their scheduled game with Grafton on Thursday was postponed by the weather.

They will return to action Friday hosting Fairmont Senior.
