Fairmont State senior receives teaching grant


Fairmont State University senior Jamie Knight was announce das the winner of the Walter Regula Mathematics Teacher-in-Training Grant by the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics. 

Knight, a Fairmont native and graduate of North Marion High School, will graduate in May with degrees in Mathematics and Secondary Mathematics Education. 

Over the last few years, Knight has served as a tutor for a math tutoring program for middle school students in local schools as well as tutoring students studying for the Praxis exam and general courses. 

“I’ve worked with multiple levels of learners and learners with different needs for instruction,” he saids. “I’ve been able to practice reflecting on mathematics and instruction to give students the best education possible.” 

The Walter Regula Mathematics Teacher-in-Training grant is named in honor of Walter Regula (1914-1975), a Marshall University math education professor who also served as president of the Council. The $600 award is made annually to an outstanding college or university student who is training to become a mathematics teacher and who has intentions of teaching in West Virginia.
