Dough Re Mi is offering a variety of homemade popsicles, made with local fresh fruit and no added sugar.

Beat the heat: Pop into Dough Re Mi for a homemade popsicle

BUCKHANNON – Local eatery Dough Re Mi is now selling a sweet treat to help beat the heat – homemade popsicles.

The coffee shop and bakery already made freshly baked goods, and now they’re making popsicles from scratch – crafted with fresh pureed fruit or their cold brew.

Co-owner of Dough Re Mi Daniel Cain said they were trying to think of something new to make when the heat wave hit.

“It has definitely been hot, and this was something fun that we haven’t really gotten to mess around with before,” Cain said. “We started about two weeks ago, and we’ve been experimenting with different flavors.”

The flavors Dough Re Mi had July 9 were watermelon and lime, mixed berry plus yogurt, banana and peanut butter, lemon and rosemary and cold brew coffee with almond milk.

Caine said the flavors on the menu can change depending on what combination they want to try and what fresh fruit they have available.

“I am a sucker for the lemon rosemary, but the watermelon and the mixed berry have been pretty popular,” Cain said.

He said the popsicles are mostly fresh pureed fruit or their own cold brew, with no added sugars.

“The process is mostly just pureeing fruit, and they don’t have any additional sugars, so they aren’t overly sweet,” Cain said. “Mostly, it’s just pureed fruit and sometimes, in the cold brew, we like to add coconut milk and then we have molds that we use to freeze them.”

Dough Re Mi has adjusted their hours after closing due to COVID-19, so the shop is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cain said they had to stop operating during their evening hours on Wednesdays for now, and hours are still subject to change.

“We also sell some baked goods, we have a used book section, music supplies and we were doing live music with a lot of local musicians normally,” Cain said. “Just before we shut down, we just got in Questionable Press, an artist that does different greeting cards, birthday cards, paper sculptures – it’s really cool.”

Dough Re Mi also offers specials they post on Facebook and Instagram each week.

“We’ll do one sandwich and a soup for the week until we run out,” Cain said. “We try to use local produce to decide what our specials will be, especially since Green Acres is right there.”
Dine-in is not available at Dough Re Mi right now, but Cain said customers can call the number listed on their Facebook page to place a carry outorder. He also said masks are currently mandatory to enter the shop.
