Active COVID-19 cases tick up locally and statewide Friday, DHHR says

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 7,629 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 97 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (106), Barbour (69), Lewis (62), Randolph (77) and Webster (53) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 17 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Seventeen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 73-year old male from Morgan County, an 86-year old female from Monongalia County, a 21-year old male from Kanawha County, an 83-year old male from Boone County, a 29-year old female from Monongalia County, a 63-year old male from Preston County, a 74-year old male from Mineral County, a 77-year old female from Boone County, a 78-year old male from Hancock County, a 38-year old female from Cabell County, a 72-year old female from Morgan County, a 64-year old female from Randolph County, an 80-year old male from Marion County, a 78-year old female from Kanawha County, an 87-year old female from Berkeley County, a 73-year old female from Fayette County, and a 75-year old male from Berkeley County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of October 29, 2021, there are currently 7,629 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 17 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 4,426 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 603 residents are hospitalized with the virus (78% unvaccinated, 22% vaccinated), with 184 currently in intensive care (83% unvaccinated, 17% vaccinated) and 117 on a ventilator (87% unvaccinated, 13% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 7.08%.

A total of 916,555 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
