Active COVID-19 cases continue to fall in West Virginia, but seven new deaths reported over holiday weekend

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 2,083 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 438 since the last report on Thursday.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (30), Barbour (6), Lewis (8), Randolph (122) and Webster (5) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of two active cases since Thursday.

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease since the report, according to the DHHR – a 73-year old male from Wyoming County, a 44-year old male from Kanawha County, an 84-year old female from Raleigh County, a 62-year old male from Berkeley County, a 78-year old female from Jefferson County, a 76-year old female from Harrison County, and a 76-year old male from Raleigh County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of June 22, 2021, there have been 2,978,347 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 163,627 total cases and 2,870 deaths,” according to a press release.

The daily percent positive was 1.62%.

A total of 807,065 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 45% of the state.
