42 new cases of COVID-19 reported in West Virginia on Sunday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said 42 new cases of COVID-19 had been identified in the state on Sunday, bringing the total to 1,771 cases since the pandemic began.

No new deaths were reported.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m. on May 24, 2020, there have been 85,817 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 1,771 total cases and 72 deaths,” according to a press release.

New cases were reported Sunday in Berkeley, Fayette, Gilmer, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Harrison, Jefferson, Kanawha, Marion, Monongalia, Ohio, Pocahontas, Preston and Putnam counties.

Thirty-six of the new cases were confirmed, while six are probable cases, according to the DHHR.

About 570 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 1,129 people have recovered and 72 have died, a mortality rate of about 6.1 percent.
